Just because you are not known in the annals of Billboard Magazine does not mean that you are not well known to the world of musicians. Should an informal poll of successful musicians as to which band has the most respect the Meters would be a serious contender to top that list.
Considered by many as the definition of New Orleans Funk the Meters not only recorded their own albums but were often used as session artists for more known artists. Their fans included Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger and their sound differed from other Funk bands of the era with a gritty, earthy sound that gave them a more natural feel. They were barely commercially successful outside of their native Louisiana but national obscurity has not prevented other artists from reaching the hallowed halls of Cleveland.
