The “Hall of Fame Season” has come to an end with the announcement of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class, and it is the largest class in recent memory.
The Cleveland based institution elected Missy Elliott, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against the Machine, Kate Bush, George Michael and The Spinners. Chaka Khan, Al Kooper and Bernie Taupin enter via the Musical Excellence Award. Link Wray and DJ Kool Herc will receive the Musical Influence Award and Don Cornelius will get the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
Four of the elected members, Elliott, Nelson, Crow and Michael enter on their first appearance on the ballot. Missy Elliott becomes the first female rapper inducted, and Nelson capped off an incredible week, first by turning 90 and now with this induction, though unlike Elliott, who only became eligible, has been eligible for decades. George Michael won the fan vote, continuing the trend of fan vote winners entering the Hall.
RATM enters on their fourth attempt, and their induction should help other Alternative acts from the 1990s. The Spinners also enter on their fourth try, and have been eligible since 1986. Kate Bush, who has been enjoying a renaissance was also nominated twice before.
Failing to gain entry were A Tribe Called Quest, Cyndi Lauper, New Order/Joy Division, Iron Maiden, White Stripes, Soundgarden and Warren Zevon.
We will begin work on revising our Notinhalloffame Rock List for next year.
We here at Notinhalloffame.com would like to congratulate the impending members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has put forth one of the most diverse group of nominees for the Class of 2023, and let’s get right into who they have nominated:
A Tribe Called Quest is nominated for the first time, and should the Alternative Hip-Hop group get in, it would open the doors for many of their ilk.
Cyndi Lauper receives her first nomination since being eligible in 2009. With a barrage of 80s hits, and an activist legacy that plays well to the voter base, this is a great ballot for her, as only Kate Bush falls close to her category.
Iron Maiden collects a second nomination, but the Heavy Metal gods face an uphill climb as the voters have shown that they do not care for their genre.
Joy Division/New Order are in for a combined nomination, which greatly improves the chances for all parties in question. This is not unprecedented, as the Hall previous nominated and inducted, as the Small Faces and Faces were put forth together. Neither group has been nominated before, and this first nomination could be their only one as this is a very strong candidate.
Kate Bush earned her fourth nomination, and no artist has enjoyed more of an interest in her music over the past twelve months with her song, “Running Up That Hill” featured on Stranger Things. Cyndi’s appearance on this ballot, could delay Bush one more time.
George Michael receives his first nomination after being eligible since 2010. The mastermind behind Wham!, had a monstrous solo career generating five number ones as a solo, and two more as a duet (one with Aretha Franklin and one with Elton John). This would be a posthumous induction, as Michael passed away on Christmas Day, 2016 from heart disease.
Missy Elliot is nominated in her first year on the ballot, and should she get in, she will be the first female rapper inducted. Generally, we try not to equate everything to gender, but the above fact makes her a near-lock for induction, but we have had similar thoughts before.
Rage Against the Machine received a fifth nomination, and now fifth in the last six years. Will RATM get in this year, or does Soundgarden siphon off some of their votes?
Sheryl Crow is also a first-time nominee. Eligible since 2019, Crow was very successful in the 1990s with many hits, but she may not have the influence factor to get over some of the other artists here.
Soundgarden is now a two-time nominee, the first coming in 2020. The Seattle group could cancel out RATM, and arguably this is a bad ballot for both.
The Spinners return with another nomination, their fourth overall and first since 2016. Could the Philly Soul pioneers play spoiler?
Warren Zevon is nominated for the first time after being eligible since 1995, and it a long time coming for the acclaimed Singer/Songwriter. We have seen before how the voting body reacts to a first-time nominee who has eligible for 20 years, but he is not the only one with that credential here.
The White Stripes are in the same camp as Missy Elliot, as they are nominated on their first year. This is the type of group that the Hall drools over; successful, influential, a tad eccentric and polotically in tune with their ideals.
Willie Nelson finally got his first nomination after decades of eligibility, and following Dolly Parton last year, does this not feel like Willie is getting in?
The Class will be announced on a date yet to be determined.
We would like to congratulate the 2023 nominees for making it to this step.
When you do long lists, it takes you a long time to do revisions.
Recently, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced the belated Class of 2021, which was originally intended to be announced last December. This means that we had some work to do at Notinhalloffame.com, and this involved three components:
Remove those who were chosen. This means that Kraftwerk, Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, Todd Rundgren, Gil Scott-Heron, Tina Turner, The Go-Go’s, Carole King, LL Cool J and Billy Preston.
Add those who are now eligible for the next class.
Alter those ranked based on your comments and votes.
Seems simple enough, right?
Let’s move on!
Our entire list can be found here, but we would like to present our new top ten.
Eminem is his first year of eligibility, and he takes over the number one spot. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that he will enter on his first year of eligibility.
Oasis moves up from #4 to #2. While there should not be any dispute of their Hall of Fame credentials, the British rockers would not likely attend the ceremony…especially with each other.
Jethro Tull climbs back to #3, which equals their highest previous rank. Despite being eligible since the 1993 vote, the progressive rock group have never been nominated.
The Smiths go to #4, which is also their highest ranking. The have been nominated twice before, 2015 & 2016.
At #5, Gram Parsons cracks the top five for the first time. Parsons has been nominated three times before, but the last was way back in 2005.
MC5 inched up one rank to #6, which matches their highest previous rank.
Judas Priest, who was nominated in 2018 and 2020, achieve their highest rank yet with #7, two higher than last year.
Willie Nelson moves up from #10 to #8.
Iron Maiden cracks the top ten for the first time at #9. They also received their first nomination last year.
New Order returns to the top ten, edging up one spot.
There are other new additions to our list:
Nickelback (#98), Spoon (#130), The Hives (#199), Fiona Apple (#232), Matchbox Twenty (#256), Fatboy Slim(#283), Shakira (#295), The Spice Girls (#353), Mogwai (#433), Staind (#444), Placebo (#503), and Doves (#561).
Eventually (and we know we said this many times) we will expand this list to an even 1,000. We will get there, we promise!
You know what we want you to do!
Cast your votes, and give us your opinions.
As always, we thank you for your support.
Approximately a few weeks ago, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced their Class of 2020. As always, this requires us to make revisions on our core Notinhalloffame.com Rock List of those worthy of consideration for the hallowed halls of Cleveland, Ohio.
This means three things:
The first is that we removed those who were chosen (The Notorious B.I.G. #6, T. Rex #14, Depeche Mode #18, The Doobie Brothers #25, Nine Inch Nails #26 & Whitney Houston #271).
The second is that we added the acts who are now Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the 2021 ceremony.
The third is that we looked at your votes and comments to assist on ranking modification.
Got all that?
Let’s move on!
You may have noticed that we have been expanding our core lists. This is no different for our Rock list, as the eventual goal is to have 1,000 ranked. We will get there, but in the meantime, we have an uneven number, but give us a year! Maybe two?
The entire Notinhalloffame.com Rock list is here, but below are the changes in our top ten:
Kraftwerk hangs on to the number one spot. To date, they have been nominated six times, including the last two years. They will likely get another kick at the can in 2021.
The highest debut comes high with Jay-Z at #2. The New York City based rapper should be a lock for induction, and he brings sure-fire star power to a 2021 ceremony.
Foo Fighters make their first appearance at #3. Like Jay-Z, it is expected that they will go “one and in”, and Dave Grohl will become a two-time inductee.
With the two new high-profile entries, there is a drop in the rankings for some of our other previous top tens.
Oasis drops from #2 to #4. Oasis is in their second year of eligibility, and they were not nominated last year. Regardless, of when (or if) they get in, you know there will be drama should any Gallagher appear.
Jethro Tull went from #3 to #5. The Progressive Rock band have been eligible for Cleveland since 1993, but have never received a nomination.
Also losing two spots were The Smiths, who went from #4 to 6. They have been eligible since 2008 and were nominated in both 2015 and 2016. The induction of Depeche Mode should help The Smiths and other 80s Alternative Bands.
MC5 goes down to #7 from #5. The proto-punk band has been eligible since 1991, and has been nominated five times including the last four years.
Sliding from #7 to number #8 is Gram Parsons. Eligible since 1992, Parsons was nominated three times, but the last one was in 2005.
At #9 is Judas Priest, who were nominated twice, including last year. They hold the same spot as last year.
Rounding out the top ten is Willie Nelson, who fell from #8. He has also never been nominated.
Jay-Z and Foo Fighters are not the only new entries.
Sleater-Kinney debuts with a very strong rank of #47. They are the third and final new entry in our top 100. The Chemical Brothers make their first appearance with #121. The top 250 also has debuts with Modest Mouse at #155 and Rammstien at #233.
The other new entries are Neutral Milk Hotel at #255, Garbage at #266, Natalie Merchant at #277, Super Furry Animals at #372, Jewel at #521 and Air at #529
You know what we want you to do!
Cast your votes and voice your opinions, as we use them for future rankings.
As always, we here at Notinhalloffame.com thank you for your support.
We have a major update on Notinhalloffame.com as our annual list of those to consider for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The first thing we did was remove the artists who were chosen for the Hall in the latest class. That group consisted of Radiohead (#1), Roxy Music (#5), The Cure (#11), Janet Jackson (#18), Def Leppard (#41), The Zombies (#85) and Stevie Nicks (#122).
The second thing we did is input the new artists who are eligible. As they were already listed on our site on the Future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame eligible section, we took your existing votes and comments into consideration.
That segues perfectly into the third thing that we did, which was to look at the votes and comments that you made on the existing entrants on the list. This matters to us and we adjusted accordingly.
As such, we are proud to present our new Top 10:
For the fourth time Kraftwerk returns to the #1 spot. They have been nominated five times including last year. They were ranked #2 last year and have never been lower than #3 since we started this website.
Oasis makes their debut at #2 making them the highest new artist on our list. The British group are certainly Hall of Fame worthy however it is unlikely that the Gallagher brothers will show up should they be chosen.
Jethro Tull returns at #3. To date, they have yet to be nominated for the Rock Hall despite being eligible since 1993.
The Smiths also hold steady at their same position at #4. The Smiths have been nominated in 2015 and 2016 and have been eligible since 2008.
MC5 moved up one spot from #6 to #5. The proto-punk group have been eligible since 1991 and have been nominated four times and the last three years.
The highest hip-hop act is now the Notorious B.I.G. who debuts at #6. Like Oasis, there is an excellent chance that he could enter on his first year of eligibility.
Gram Parsons hold his position at #7. Parsons has been eligible since 1992 and he has been nominated three times the last occurring in 2005.
Willie Nelson also remains with the same rank at #8. Nelson has been eligible since 1986 and has never been nominated.
Judas Priest climbed one rung from #10 to #9. The Heavy Metal outfit from the United Kingdom have been eligible since 1999 and were nominated once in 2018.
New Order swapped spots with Judas Priest and dropped to #10. They have been eligible since 2006 and have never been nominated.
Weezer debuts at a high profile spot at #40 and Korn also joins them in the Top 50 with a debut at #49. The Top 100 showcases Outkast at #59, Daft Punk at #71 and Marilyn Manson at #79.
The other new entries are Elliott Smith (#127), Jeff Buckley (#157), Nas (#174), Portishead (#215), The Fugees (#245), Usher (#293), Godspeed! You Black Emperor (#355). Aaliyah (#361), At the Drive-In (#375), Cake (#403), Supergrass (#413), Bush (#425), Ben Harper (#443), Tricky (#506) and Brandy (#534).
The entire list can be found here.
At present we are ranking 588 acts. Longtime visitors know that when we began this a decade ago we only ranked 100 acts, grew it to 250 and eventually 500. We have a long term goal of reaching 1,000 hence why when there are new entries we did not remove any to keep at an even 500.
For those wondering about our other list revisions we will have the Baseball and Football ones done shortly.
As always we thank you for your support and we encourage you to cast your votes and offer your opinions!
The first content that we ever put up on Notinhalloffame.com was our original Rock and Roll list ranking those who were not yet in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but were worthy of consideration. It ranked 100 acts, and as we continued on we extended it to 500. Our eventual intent is to get to 1,000 and at present we now have 567 ranked.
The selection of The Moody Blues, The Cars, Nina Simone, Bon Jovi and Dire Straits to the Hall means that they are removed and newly eligible acts now populate our list. Rankings of existing musicians have been altered based on your comments and votes.
The new top 25 features:
Radiohead takes over the top spot after being ranked #2. They were nominated last year in their first year of eligibility and it was widely speculated that they would get in but it should be only a matter of time.
Kraftwerk returns to the number two rank after being #1 last year. The influential band has been nominated four times (2003, 2013, 2015 & 2017) and was our original number one selection when we put out our first list in 2010.
Jethro Tull holds firm at #3. To the surprise of many, the British Progressive Rock band has never been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame despite being eligible for twenty-five years.
The Smiths also held their spot at #4. This is the third year that they have been ranked this high and they were nominated in 2015 and 2016.
Roxy Music is ranked #5 for the second year in a row. They have been eligible for the Hall since 1997.
MC5 is ranked #6 for the third straight year. They have been nominated the last two years.
Gram Parsons moves up one spot to #7, which is his highest ranking to date. He was nominated three times in 2002. 2004 & 2005.
Willie Nelson drops down to #8. Nelson has never been nominated.
New Order returns to the top 10 moving from up from #11. They also have never been nominated and have been ranked as high as #5.
Judas Priest makes their first appearance in our top ten taking the #10 position after being ranked #13. The heavy metal pioneers also earned their first nomination last year after being eligible since 1999.
The Cure moves up to #11 from #14, which is their highest rank to date. They were nominated in 2012.
John Coltrane remains at #12. He has never been nominated.
Todd Rundgren continues to climb our rank, moving from #15 to #13. He has moved up every year since our list’s inception and he has also never been nominated although has been eligible since 1995.
Iron Maiden climbs to #14 after being #17. They have also never been nominated and this to date their highest rank.
Dick Dale moved up one spot to #15. The “King of the Surf Guitar” has never been nominated.
T.Rex rises two spots to #16, their highest rank to date. They have also never been nominated.
Pixies also went up two spots to #17. Never nominated, they have been eligible for the Hall since 2012.
Janet Jackson also increased her rank and is now at the #18 hole. Jackson was nominated in both 2016 & 2017.
Joy Division reached the top 20 for the first time reaching #19. Like New Order, they have never been nominated.
King Crimson returns to the top 20. They were ranked #23 last year and they have never been nominated.
Wu-Tang Clan plummeted from #10 to #21. They have only been eligible for two years.
Depeche Mode continued to rise and are now #22. They have been nominated for the last two years.
Big Star dropped to #23. This is their lowest ranking to date and they have yet to be nominated.
Link Wray moved up three to #24, his first time in our Top 25. The guitar legend was nominated last year and also in 2014.
Beck closes the Top 25. He was ranked at that last year.
As you see, no new act made our revised Top 25. That doesn’t mean that there are not new entries as we have 19 debuts to our Notinhalloffame.com list.
They are:
Bjork at #56.
Dave Matthews Band at #81.
Blink-182 at #90.

As always, we here at Notinhalloffame.com thank you for your votes and comments and encourage you to offer more as this does alter future rankings.
Look for our revised Notinhalloffame.com Baseball list in the upcoming weeks.
With our next selection we know that we are again breaking traditional Rock protocol. However, sometimes an artist just has a certain intangible that just makes you like them even though his music sounds like nothing else in your CD (then MP3, and now streaming) collection. We here at the Not in Hall of Fame can’t help but think that Willie Nelson is one of those artists.
