gold star for USAHOF

8. Mikko Rantanen

8. Mikko Rantanen

Drafted 10th overall in 2015, Mikko Rantanen came with high expectations after a tremendous junior career in Finland.  Rantanen didn’t play much with the big club as a rookie, as he played mostly in the AHL, where he was the co-winner of the Rookie of the Year.  Rantanen would win a permanent roster spot the year after, and he would score 38 Points, but afterward, he would begin his ascent to greatness.

In 2017-18 and 2018-19, Rantanen scored 84 and 87 Points respectively, and was an All-Star in 2018-19.  Rantanen's skills continued to develop, and he is now on a four-year streak of averaging over a Point per Game, and last season, he was named a Second Team All-Star, his first post-season accolade.  He was also fifth in Goals and in Points and was tenth in Hart voting.  Notably, Rantanen also led the NHL in Plus/Minus (+30).  Rantanen had 92 Points, and another 25 in the Playoffs where he helped the Avs win their third Stanley Cup.   Colorado did not repeat as champions immediatelt, but Rantanen had his most productive year with 105 Points, and his first 50-Goal year (55).  Rantanen was also sixth in Hart voting.  Last season, he was close to his best Point output with 104.

As of this writing, Rantanen is in his tenth year with Colorado and is one of the better forwards in the game.  Notably, he enters this over a Point per Game.
