2023 Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame - Round 1

Stan Ross

Stan Ross
  • TV Show/Movie Appeared: Mr. 3000 (2004)
  • Actor/Actress: Bernie Mac
  • Position Portrayed: Outfield
  • Played For:: Milwaukee Brewers
  • Why you should vote:: Bernie Mac was one of the great comedians of his day.
  • Why you should not vote:: That did not translate here.
  • Basically this is your standard movie about a selfish athlete who learns to play as part of a team. The difference here is that the main character learns this in the midst of a very selfish comeback, and we are treated to a few jokes by Bernie Mac.

    Like many comedians, Bernie Mac’s comedy doesn’t translate well into movies other than a few brief moments. That isn’t the only problem as we are supposed to believe that Major League Baseball (the sport and league that has more statistics and analyzers than all other sports put together) could possibly give three extra hits to a player only to uncover it years later.

    Such is the premise of Mr. 3000, where Stan Ross (Bernie Mac) learns he only has 2,997 career hits which he feels effects his marketing (he has dubbed himself Mr. 3000) and his Hall of Fame chances, as he appears to be the only 3,000 hit player not in Cooperstown; that is unless there is a plot point we missed where it was revealed that Bernie did Performance Enhancing Drugs which would explain his omission. Either way, Ross comes back, learns about teamwork and retires with 2,999 sacrificing his 3,000 hit for the good of the Milwaukee Brewers. Whether he got into Cooperstown or not remains on the mind of no one.
