Calais Campbell will go down in history as being more successful in his post-Cardinal career, but it was in Arizona that his career began.

A Second Round Pick in 2008, Campbell helped Arizona make the Super Bowl in his rookie year, and the year after, he became a starter at Left Defensive End.  Campbell's skills improved slowly, year by year, and in 2014, he went to his first Pro Bowl, with another following the season.  The multi-faceted player did not add a third consecutive Pro Bowl in 2016 but was a Second Team All-Pro, his second and first since 2014.

Campbell signed with Jacksonville in 2017 and, as a Jaguar, won the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2019.  As a Cardinal, Campbell accumulated 56.5 Sacks, 107 Tackles for Loss, and 501 Combined Tackles.

Calais Campbell played the first nine seasons of his career with the Arizona Cardinals, where he was twice a Pro Bowl Selection. He signed with the Jaguars at the age of 31, so it was not expected that he would exceed what he did in the desert, but that was precisely what he accomplished in Florida.

We here at Notinhalloffame.com thought it would be fun to take a look at the major awards in North American team sports and see how it translates into Hall of Fame potential.

Needless to say, different awards in different sports yield hall of fame potential.  In basketball, the team sport with the least number of players on a roster, the dividend for greatness much higher.  In baseball, it is not as much as a great individual season does not have the same impact.

Last time, we looked at the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award of the NBA.  This time we look at its Football counterpart, the Walter Payton Man of the Year.

The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award originated in 1970, and is given to the player honoring a player’s volunteer and charity work.  It was originally named the Man of the Year, and it was renamed in the honor of former winner and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Walter Payton, after he died in 1999.

While this is generally given to star players, we will not dissect the season in question as the award is not meant to be defined by stat lines and on field accomplishments.  

So how many Walter Payton Man of the Year Award winners have made the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

A 15-year veteran, Campbell’s six Pro Bowls happened in a seven-year period (2014-20), which includes all three of his seasons as a Jacksonville Jaguar and his first in Baltimore.  Campbell, who recently won the Walter Payton Man of the Year, also was honored with an All-Decade Selection.  Campbell is 38 but still plays solid football as he begins his first year with the Miami Dolphins.  High-character guys, especially those with a significant milestone (Campbell joined the 100-Sack club last year), generally find their way into Canton.
