Lon Warneke was relatively ineffective during the beginning of his run as a Major League Baseball player.   This would change when Cubs Manager Rogers Hornsby noticed that he was staring at his feet rather than at the plate when he threw.  That correction turned him into an also-ran to an MVP runner-up.

That was the 1932 Season, where he led the National League in Wins (22), ERA (2.37), and bWAR (6.9), and he helped Chicago win the Pennant.  That was Warneke’s best season, but he was far from done as he would be an All-Star in 1933, 1934, and 1936 and had two more 20 Win Seasons.  Warneke was surprisingly traded to the St. Louis Cardinals after the 1936 Season, which generated anger from the Cubs fans.  He would come back when his contract was purchased back from St. Louis during the 1942 campaign, where he finished his career.  He would win 109 Games as a Cub.
