Jon Matlack debuted for the New York Mets two years after their “Miracle Season” of 1969, but the southpaw found a home as part of a powerful Mets rotation of the 1970s.

From 1972 to 1976, Matlack was one of the better Pitchers in the National League.  Winning the Rookie of the Year in 1972, Matlack went to three straight All-Star Games (1974-76).  Matlack only had one top-ten Cy Young finish (sixth in 1976), but he led the National League in bWAR for Pitchers (9.1) and FIP (2.42), and was second in SO/BB (2.566) and third in ERA (2.32).  How did he not receive any Cy Young votes that year?

Matlack was traded to the Texas Rangers after the 1977 Season, but realistically, only his first year there was any good.  He played until 1983, retiring one game under .500 (125-126), but was massively underrated.
