Tenta was an amateur wrestler in college (LSU) and he took the skills he had to Japan and learned the art of Sumo Wrestling. Although he was good, the sport wasn’t for him, and he followed the next logical path into the pro ranks. He did well in the All Japan promotion, but athletic big men don’t fall from trees and these were the type of wrestlers that Vince loved to feed to Hulk Hogan. Now billed as “Earthquake”, he had a long feud with the Hulkster and when that run ended, his athleticism and solid work rate allowed him to stay as a viable member of the roster for years after.
John Tenta would follow his friend (Hogan) to WCW and join a roster of wrestlers (the Dungeon of Doom) whose sole purpose was to end Hulkamania. He was never used well there but was always a steady worker. His final forgettable run as Golga in the WWF is best forgotten, so we will just remember his time as “Earthquake”; one of the better big men of the business
