There have some who have claimed that Alexisonfire is responsible for putting post hardcore music on the mainstream in Canada, and maybe they are right. What should not be disputed by anyone was that this was a loud and fun band in concert and will hold a place in the Canadian music canon.
Following in the tracks of Oasis, U.K. band, Athlete would achieve some success in their native England in the mid-00’s, specifically with a number one album (Tourist). While they never made a dent in America, Athlete’s experimental and diverse sound over the years certainly brought them acclaim, but as always, without American success, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rarely comes calling.
As of this writing Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but easily could be at some point (hopefully we remember to edit this when it happens). This one should be interesting. There are a lot of people who would scoff at the idea of Avril Lavigne ever making the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That criticism stems from her singing perceived lightweight material and as a pop singer (which is what she is despite attempts to categorize her as anything else) there is a desire to automatically label her as unworthy.
Black Lips are a very entertaining Punk band, but their charm is primarily based on their rowdy live shows, many of which were known to get completely out of control. That should not take away from a band that is lyrically better than they get credit for, though we wonder what percentage of their fans focus on that.
Many of the reviews for Pennsylvania’s Alt-Rock back, Breaking Benjamin, generally praised them for their consistent style. That might be praise, but while they did have success in the mid 2000’s with a post grunge sound, it was similar to what a lot of other bands were doing at the time and not exactly innovate or unique. Pop-Punk. Emo. Post-Hardcore. Like most American bands, there are multiple labels that you can slap on Fall Out Boy, and while this is a band that has numerous detractors, the Pete Wnetz led group also has to be called very successful.
While there should not be a lot of doubt that the New Zealand group, Flight of the Conchords were hysterical and ushered a lot of laughs on HBO, is there not equal perception that this is not a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act? We will let you tell us if there is more to their story.
From Canada, Fucked Up has been long known for their raucous live performances and hardcore sound. Behind that hard exterior, some serious lyrical skill is in place, though we doubt anyone from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will ever take notice. We doubt even more that Fucked Up cares.
The stage name of Cleveland’s Gregg Michael Gillis, Girl Talk can be summed up easily as mash-up of previous songs. While that might not seem creative to some, Girl Talk does an incredible job at it and has achieved critical praise for his work. Sampling does not get more elaborate than this.
We aren’t going to hold our breath waiting for Hilary Duff to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and likely neither is she. This doesn’t take away from the fact that in her teens, she sold a lot of albums in the bubblegum, and pop genre and did have a number one album. Sometimes music doesn’t have to be that deep.
Synth Pop stars, Hot Chip might be one of the most unique electronica bands of the modern era. The London based group approaches their concerts as if they were a “regular band” and coupled with the falsetto skills of their lead singer, Alexis Taylor makes an interesting contrast to everything around him. Beloved in his circle, Iron and Wine (essentially the one man Folk Band, of Samuel Bean) put out some of the sweetest and soothing sounding Indie Folk music in years. The critics have gushed over Bean (as they should have) and commercially he has not done badly, but Folk music may have reached a certain quota in Cleveland and has a long line ahead of him.
