RIP: Paul Silas

Sad news emerged from the basketball world as Paul Silas passed away at the age of 79. One of the most respected players of his generation, Silas was never a superstar, but a workmanlike power forward that was at his best coming off the bench and bringing the muscle to the court.  A great rebounder and defender, Silas was an integral part of three championship teams, two in Boston and one in Seattle, he was also a two-time All-Star.  A long career highlighted by being on winners and collecting over 12,000 rebounds, and the rebounding title while at Creighton.  Named to…
The Black College Football Hall of Fame announced the eight men who will comprise the 14th Class The ceremony will take place on June 10, but before that, they will be recognized at halftime during the second annual HBCU Legacy Bowl on February 25 in New Orleans. The Hall of Fame season continues, as Pat Hughes, became the 47th recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award, which is given annually for excellence in broadcasting. Hughes began doing Cubs radio in 1996, and has been the voice for nine playoff teams.  He beat out Dave Campbell, Joe Castiglione, Gary Cohen, Jacques Doucet, Tom Hamilton, Jerry Howarth, Ernie Johnson Sr., Duane Kuiper and Steve Stone, when the 15-member Committee chose him. The International Boxing Hall of Fame has announced the Class of 2023, which is headlined by a man who beat Manny Pacquiao, Timothy Bradley. Fighting in the Light Welterweight and Welterweight division, Bradley (33-2-1-1 13 KO) was a two-time WBO Light Welterweight Champion, WBO Welterweight Champion and WBO Light Welterweight Champion.  Best known for his trilogy against Pacquiao (winning one, losing two), Bradley’s 2013 win over Ruslan Provodnikov was named the Fight of the Year, which he followed up by a statement win over Juan Manuel Marquez.  He currently serves as an analyst for ESPN. Today the Contemporary Baseball Veterans Committee met and voted on, and elected Fred McGriff unanimously, receiving all sixteen votes. The committee was comprised of Hall of Fame platers, Greg Maddux, Jack Morris, Ryne Sandberg, Lee Smith, Frank Thomas, Alan Trammell, Executives, Paul Beeston, Theo Epstein, Derrick Hall, Arte Moreno, Kim Ng, Dave St. Peter, Ken Williams and Veteran Media Members/Historians Steve Hirdt, LaVelle Neal and Susan Slusser.  McGriff, who played First Base, was a five-time All-Star, received 39.8 percent in 2019, his last year on the writer’s ballot, but this committee is more player driven.  He had 493 Home Runs, and…
