For younger readers, the visual of a late 40 something, balding, cross-eyed, Shawn Michaels coming out to “Sexy Boy” is just so wrong, but when you have had the same theme for over 20 years, is it automatically grandfathered in as normal?
I guess it is.
It is worth discussing that “Sexy Boy” was not the first solo song he used as for about a month following the infamous heel turn which saw him throw Marty Jannetty’s head into the barber shop window, he used the classical composition, “Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin, but that lasted a month, as “Sexy Boy” would soon become one of the most enduring songs in wrestling folk lore.
Michaels was not the first to sing the theme song of “Sexy Boy” as “Sensational” Sherri Martel took on the lead vocals of the Jimmy Hart penned song. Sherri was Shawn’s first manager in the WWF, and the unique combination worked and for what it is worth, I always felt it sounded better from Sherri than Shawn.
Seriously, Shawn singing about how he is not your “Boy Toy” sounds strange, where it works much better from a female perspective.
No matter.
When it worked best (with Shawn’s vocals) was during his WWF Championship run, where he wore the chaps, leather hat, and looked more like a gay stripper than pro wrestler. Still, Michaels at that time really could pull off that look as the man who was considered by many to be the best wrestler in the world was almost daring you to doubt with him that confidence.
Actually, nobody else could have pulled it off!
Oh, and by the way, this was (allegedly) once covered by Vince McMahon. That alone, makes this legendary to me.
