The Athletes

Philip Finch

The token morbidly obese guy might be better known for his role as “House” in two of the Police Academy films where jokes revolved around his 500 pound frame. Basically, he was brought in here to do the same, only in a sweater vest as a reluctant yet cerebral star of the o-line. It must have worked, because we remember his performance more than Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson who were in the same film. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Wildcats (1986) Actor: Tab Thacker Position Portrayed: Offensive Lineman Played for: Central HS Why you should vote for him: How…

Philo Beddoe

There was a fifteen year period where Clint Eastwood was about as high you could get in movie royalty and fans would watch his movies regardless of the premise. As long as you got to see Clint beat someone up or shoot some people, generally you were happy. Eastwood was not known as a comedic actor, but one of his most successful characters was the bareknuckle boxer, Philo Beddoe in the two Comedy/Action films, “Every Which Way but Loose” and “Any Which Way You Can”. His sidekick was an orangutan (yes an orangutan) and he ran afoul of a motorcycle…

Pierre Lambert

Unless you are a Canadian, (and even then only if you are French Canadian) you may not remember a very ambitious project by the multi-lingual CBC to do a hockey soap opera shot in both English and French. The show was a hit in Quebec, though not so much in English Canada, where it had only a cult following and only ran two seasons. Still, in Quebec, this remained a big show, and has been constantly revived. As such, we thought we would nominate the show’s first primary star, “Top Cat” Pierre Lambert. The dynamic player was not just a…

Pretty Ricky Conlan

Damn, the film “Creed” really does follow the first Rocky doesn’t it?In the aforementioned film, Adonis Creed gains an opportunity to fight for the Light Heavyweight Champion, that being the braggadocios and soon to be incarcerated “Pretty” Ricky Conlan.  Conlan was undefeated, and spoiler alert, remained so after his fight with Adonis, but he left his native Liverpool still a hero and humbled at the same time.

Quick Rick Roberts

It may not be our favorite cinematic Roddy Piper performance (that will always be his role in “They Live”) but our favorite wrestler of all time only had one role as a ….wrestler. As such, we would like to nominate “Hot Rod” as “Quick” Rick Roberts; a role that did not really fit his WWF persona, but really, this is all we have. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Body Slam (1987) Actor: “Rowdy” Roddy Piper Why you should vote for him: We know we are not the only hardcore fans of the Rowdy one. Why you should not vote for…

Quincy McCall

So by the “fourth quarter” of the movie he was a bench player for the Los Angeles Lakers, and then at the end was a spectator at a WNBA game?   What’s next, a movie based on Adam Morrison?   The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Love and Basketball (2000) Actor: Omar Epps Position Portrayed: Point Guard Played for: USC/Los Angeles Lakers Why you should vote for him: Um…….. Why you should not vote for her: We compared him to Adam Morrison; isn’t that enough?

Racki

Racki was your typical goon. He loved to hurt people; especially “pretty boys”. We can’t say that he was the best sports villain; but he was the one with the least amount of acting range. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Youngblood (1986) Actor: George Finn Position Portrayed: Goon Played for: Thunder Bay Bombers Why you should vote for him: He took out Swayze. No bar fighter who ever entered the Double Deuce could do that. Why you should not vote for him: He lost to Rob Lowe in a fist fight at the end. How does that happen?

Randall "Pink" Floyd

We almost totally forgot about this one. Dazed and Confused became one of the great cult movies of all time and a was great look at American High School Life in 1976. As much as this was an ensemble effort, the only linking character to everyone was the returning Quarterback, Randall “Pink” Floyd. We never saw him play, but we were led to believe he was very good, based on his teammates’ passive efforts to hope he would sign the pledge not to do drugs or do anything detrimental to the greater good of going for a State Championship. Again,…

Randy "The Ram" Robinson

“The Wrestler” does not have that happy ending that most professional wrestling matches have. Actually, it has that ending that sadly mimicked the life of many pro wrestlers. It is not a film that appeals to only wrestling fans, but a dramatic masterpiece that was the most acclaimed of the year (2008) and justifiably gained a mass audience. “The Wrestler” in question was Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Mickey Rourke) whose best days were at least two decades behind him and was living a shell of existence to satisfy the only thing he really knows. If this Hall of Fame is…

Randy Daytona

From the entertaining film, “Balls of Fury”, we have the protagonist from the film, Randy Daytona. Now, forgetting the fact that this is a film that displays a sport that has virtually no traction in the United States or really anywhere, do we have anyone who can really stand up to Christopher Walken in this role?   We don’t think so either, though we love the name of “Randy Daytona”! The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Balls of Fury (2007) Actor: Dan Fogler Why You Should Vote For Him: If this is the sport for you, than this is it. Why You…

Rannulph Januh

Why did Bagger Vance care about this guy’s golf game anyway? Somehow, we think they could have made a triumphant period Golf piece without this plot device. Oh, and what kind of name is Rannulph anyway? The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000) Actor: Matt Damon Why you should vote for him: Damon has a great body of work, and though we are not fond of this film it isn’t his fault. Why you should not vote for him: This movie has no staying power; rare for a golf film.

Ray Finkle

Place Kickers get no love from anybody, and when they screw up, nobody wears the goat horns higher. This brings us to Ray Finkle, who cost the Miami Dolphins the Super Bowl by missing what would have been the winning Field Goal by going “Wide Right”. His failure in the big game (which he blamed on Dan Marino, his place holder for not putting the ball, “laces out”) turned him insane; and in turn undergo a sex change which saw him/her become the Miami police Chef and orchestrate a lavish kidnapping of Marino and a dolphin who was pegged for…

Ray Jennings

Played by real life Running Back Arian Foster (who incidentally was himself undrafted) we meet Ray Jennings a Running Back (surprise) from Florida State in the film Draft Day. Let’s just cut right to it shall we? We have a beast of a real NFL player (who acted just well enough) whose dad happened to be Cheeseburger Eddie. How can he not be on the ballot?              The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Draft Day (2013) Actor: Arian Foster Position Played: Running Back Played for: Florida State Why You Should Vote For Him: We have a real RB in the…

Reno Hightower

After reviewing the performance of Kurt Russell in “The Best of Times” we thought of two things instantly: 1. How come Kurt Russell did not do more fictitious athletes (he would have been great at it) 2. How accurate it was that people glorify their high school accomplishments on the athletic spectrum. As Reno Hightower, Kurt Russell was the athletic star of a small town whose accomplishments became embellished, and only Hightower remembered the limits of what he was. This may not have been a great film, but it did paint a picture on the high school athlete….and what happens…

Ricardo "Go-Go" Gomez

It may have felt at times that Ricardo “Go Go” Gomez was a token Latino on the White Shadow, but as this was an inner city High School in Los Angeles, the question was how come there wasn’t more representation from the Hispanic community on the show. Overall, the character of Ricardo “Go Go” Gomez was not the best one on the show, and frankly its portrayer (Ira Augustain) was a mediocre actor. Although Gomez was written inconsistently in comparison to some of the others, it was good to show a Hispanic face on Prime Time when few were shown…

Rick Kane

In the traditional sports genre, we have a character that wins a wave tank competition in Arizona and looks to see what he has against the big dogs in Hawaii. If you understand Sports films, you already know the plot, so let’s not “spoil” it here, shall we?

Rip

Hulk Hogan’s first leading role…..well, it should have been his last. As campy as “No Holds Barred” was (it has veered into that strange ‘so bad it is must watch like a car crash) it has sadly become the Godfather II of Hogan’s overall body of work. There is no point going into too much detail here.   Hulk Hogan played “Rip”, who coincidentally was a professional wrestler who is the top star of a cable network, and is being courted by an “evil” owner of rival network…..and wait a minute, are we discussing the “plot” here? We will finish by…

Rod Tidwell

How about an Academy Award winning performance for the Hall? Cuba Gooding Jr, won the best Supporting Actor Award for his performance as Rod Tidwell, the braggadocios Wide Receiver who is Jerry Maguire’s lone client. Although, Maguire is often credited with the “Show me the Money” line, it was Tidwell who actually said it first. Tidwell was comedic gold when showcasing his swagger, but Gooding Jr. was given probably the best role in his life, and gave the character a depth that allowed us to care about him personally. Tidwell’s gridiron play was featured prominently; especially on a featured Monday…

Roger Dorn

When the first Major League came out in 1989, Corbin Bernsen was one of the top television stars in the United States. His portrayal of the slimy, yet affable Arnie Becker on L.A. Law made him a star. With magazine covers and Emmy nominations, what is the next step for every television star of that level? Why a stab at feature films of course! With a high billing, Bernsen was cast as the team’s lone super star, Roger Dorn, whose unlikable character was only concerned with preserving his worth for another large contract; basically shown by his lack of hustle…

Ross "The Boss" Rhea

It may not have been a large role, but was not Leiv Schreiber effective as Ross “The Boss” Rhea” in his role as a hockey goon? We think so, and we thought he nailed the rile as a veteran goon to the ‘t’ thus leading to an effective contest against the hero at the end. He was a villain who was not exactly evil, but was motivated to win based on his athletic accomplishments. That in itself makes him a solid character for our purposes. The Bullet Points: Movie(s) Appeared: Goon (2011) Actor: Leiv Schreiber Position Portrayed: Enforcer Played for:…

Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy

Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy should have been a golf superstar, but lacked the ambition; until he was pissed off by Don Johnson and wanted to beat him at the U.S. Open and land Rene Russo in the process. As always Kevin Costner (McAvoy) plays a fictitious athlete brilliantly and unlike Crash Davis, who had the drive but not the talent, McAvoy was talented but lacked the drive. What stood out the most in this film was his 12 on the 18th hole, where after attempt after attempt he tried to shoot the ball over the water hazard instead of playing…

Roy Munson

The 1979 Iowa Amateur Bowling Champion never lived up to his billing. Losing your right hand in a con gone wrong can do that. To us, the character of Roy Munson is one of the greatest comedic characters in a sports flick. From the bad clothes, comb over hairdo and just being the unluckiest son of a bitch we ever saw in a movie, Munson is the definition of “lovable loser”. We would consider voting for him just for his puking reaction after having sex with his ghastly landlord to avoid eviction; actually we are laughing aloud just thinking about…

Russ Tyler

Brought in to appeal to the urban cool demographic, Russ Tyler (Kenan Thompson) was a great street hockey player with a sharp tongue that naturally translated well on the ice. Wait, you are saying that doesn’t seem logical? In the Mighty Dicks series, nothing really is, (in D2, their chief rival was Iceland, who has never participated in any major International Ice Hockey Tournament), so we will overlook a lot as long as it entertaining. Kenan Thompson was at least that. The Bullet Points: Movies Appeared: D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994) D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996) Actor: Kenan Thompson Position…

Ryan Dunne

We can’t say that we cared whether or not Ryan Dunne made it to the Major Leagues. Actually, we can’t remember much of the Baseball in this movie at all. Based on how often this gets shown on cable, we don’t think a lot more people will be pondering this rhetorical question. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Summer Catch (2001) Actor: Freddie Prinze Jr. Position Portrayed: Pitcher Played for: Chatham Athletics Why you should vote for him: We really don’t have much here. Why you should not vote for him: This movie was abysmal on every level.

Saleh

There have been a few players who became big NBA stars from the continent of Africa, namely Hakeem Olajuwon and Dikembe Mutombo, and others who would go on to have solid professional careers. Africa wasn’t flooding the NBA, nor was they all from one particular country, but it was however noticed throughout the world of Basketball. Apparently someone from Hollywood noticed too, as they felt there was a need to make a movie about Kevin Bacon recruiting an African Center. The film was not terrible, but was largely forgettable. In fact, we are not even sure what African country it…
